    FEATURED COACHING TIPS

Tape yourself at time-outs. Later, play it back and learn from it. Are you getting instructions across to your players in a clear and easily understood manner?

Tell a player one negative comment and nine positive comments...chances are he/she will remember the negative comment.

Linger after practice. That gives you an opportunity to communicate with players who stay after practice to shoot on their own. Some coaches rush to the door as soon as practice ends. What message does that send your players?

"We want to play fast....that does not mean we want to shoot fast."...Seth Greenberg

After the ball crosses midcourt, get the ball into your best playmakers hands.

"End practice on time. Post practice plan in locker room so that players will know (1) what will be worked on today and (2) what time practice ends."....Brad Soderberg

    "I never ball-screened until I realized NBA players can't guard it."...Ed Murphy

"I don't like the first shot in transition. I want a lay-up. I like the 15' shot in the set offense."...Jim Foster

MAGIC .6 SECOND PLAY VS. THE LAKERS

#1 cuts off #5 keeping defense busy.

#3 sets rear screen for #2 cutting to the basket
for pass from #4. It was a great pass from Hedo Turkoglu
and even though the shot was missed, it was an excellent play.

    an outstanding rebounding team

    SPECIAL STRATEGY IDEAS:

Do you have a special defense to defend the 3 point shot in the last few seconds of a game? If you don't you should put one in as soon as possible.

If you are a pressing team or in a pressing situation , be sure to sub on free throws (the second made shot) to stop the opponents fast break and give you a chance to set up your press.

What do you do after a time-out? If you are on defense, do you take the opportunity to change defense or trap? If you are on offense, do you run a special play?

Do you practice a play when you WANT or HAVE TO MISS a free throw? You should, for you never know when you will be faced with that situation. You are down 2 with 3 seconds to go and have one free throw. You have to miss and practicing it ahead of time will give you a better chance of succeeding.

You MUST save a time-out for a last minute strategic situation!

Most players do not understand foul management and must be taught in practice situations.

There are four types of intentional fouls:
    1. Instant intentional (When clock is a factor or when a bad FT shooter gets the ball)
    2. Backcourt intentional (Time is big factor)
    3. Front court intentional (You might aggressively try to steal the ball in backcourt, but have your team coached to intentionally foul after your opponent crosses the center line)
    4. Delayed intentional (20 seconds left in game, opponent is freezing ball with 1 or 2 point lead. You may want to go all out to steal the ball for 10 seconds, then intentionally foul if your aggressive defense does not get a steal.

Don't overlook the blockout on a defensive free-throw. Many games have been lost when an offensive player was not blocked out on a missed free-throw.
